Embrace a Fresh Start: Setting Up Your Planner for the New Month - Jane's Agenda®

Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Up Your Planner

As a new month dawns upon us, it brings with it a sense of renewal and opportunity. What better way to harness this fresh start than by setting up your planner to make the most of the days ahead? A well-organized planner can be your best companion, keeping you focused, motivated, and in control of your life. In this blog post, we will explore some essential steps to set up your planner for the new month, ensuring a smooth and productive journey ahead.

Setting up your planner for the new month

Step 1: Reflect on the Past Month

Before diving into the new month, take a moment to reflect on the previous one. Review your accomplishments, note any unmet goals, and assess what worked and what didn't. Understanding your past performance will help you make more realistic and achievable plans for the coming month. At Jane's Agenda, we call this a debrief. At work, we all gather around and discuss the previous month to make a plan to improve the upcoming one. In my personal planner I like to use this time to record any KPI's/metrics from the month so I know how different aspects of our plans performed. I write all of this detail on the page at the back of my month.

This is the perfect time to add any important dates to the month for next year. Once you are done migrating your calendar items and any notes you want to keep in your planner, you can move these calendar pages to your archive planner. We will discuss this topic in a later blog post.

Step 2: Outline Your Goals

What do you want to achieve this month? Set clear and specific goals for yourself, both big and small. Whether it's completing a project at work, incorporating a new exercise routine, or dedicating more time to a hobby, jot down your objectives to give your month a sense of purpose. I recommend picking at least one goal for each area of life that you want to improve. Personal Health, Relationships, Finances, etc. We offer a simple goal setting planner insert in our shop if you need a little more help. Find it here.

Step 3: Plan Important Dates and Events

Mark down any crucial dates and events for the month ahead. Birthdays, anniversaries, appointments, and deadlines should all have their place in your planner. This way, you can stay ahead of time and be well-prepared for any upcoming commitments. Did you plan time for rest? Time for planning? Time for what matters? Don't forget those either.

Step 4: Create a Monthly Calendar View

Use your planner's monthly calendar view to get a big-picture overview of the month. Seeing all your commitments laid out at once helps you identify busy periods and plan your schedule more efficiently. This is the perfect time to rearrange what you can to even out your schedule. If a certain week is going to be extremely hectic, perhaps you want to reschedule that dentist appointment to a less busy week.

My favorite monthly planner insert can be found here.

Step 5: Break Down Tasks Weekly

As you enter the new month, start breaking down your monthly goals into smaller, manageable tasks on a weekly basis. Weekly planning allows for greater flexibility and ensures you stay focused on your priorities. I like to schedule these directly into the boxes on my monthly spread.

Step 6: Incorporate Habit Trackers

Habits are the building blocks of a successful and fulfilling life. Consider adding habit trackers to your planner for habits you want to develop or maintain. Whether it's drinking more water, meditating, or reading daily, tracking your progress fosters accountability and keeps you on track. Some of our monthly planner inserts incorporate habit trackers into the layout, but we also offer a tip-in size habit tracker planner insert that you can add to any spread. Find it here.

Step 7: Add Inspiring Quotes and Visuals

A touch of inspiration can go a long way in keeping you motivated throughout the month. Sprinkle your planner with uplifting quotes or motivational images that resonate with your goals and aspirations. Don't want to write quotes in your planner? A quote card is perfect for this. You can clip it onto your month and change it out as you like. These are available in our shop and included with every Planner Lifestyle Subscription Box.

Step 8: Schedule Regular Reviews

Set aside time at the end of each week or month to review your progress and make any necessary adjustments. You can use this time to schedule the micro appointments and tasks into your weekly or daily spread.

Celebrate your achievements and learn from any challenges you faced. This habit of regular reflection will help you stay on track and continuously improve your planning process.
